These two paintings by American artist, Thomas Akawie, were painted or mounted on carved wood frames - one diamond shaped. They were my mothers and hung in our living room, each one above a chocolate brown, velour and tufted sofa and love seat. My mother passed in 2007 and regrettably I never asked what happened to them. Reaganomics sent my family packing from the North and into Texas in 1984 and the back drop of our lives (including these paintings) as I remember… dreamy distant places, ancestral places - Nefertiti bust, Capiz shell chandeliers + lush house plants in a small suburban town outside of Chicago , disappeared or was quickly transformed into something much less hopeful amongst the inner city of Oak Cliff, Dallas, TX. While my parents worked hard to rebuild, I feel sure something magical was lost in that time for us. This time and the images associated with it are forever burned in my imagination and are continually accessed for inspiration in the designs and emotions I wish to evoke in my art today. You can’t imagine how elated I was to discover the artist and locate the images online, when Last Nov., press_sf listed a 1977 publication on Instagram called, “Visions” that had a piece of one of the paintings in it! The search is now on to find the actual pieces and restore a piece of the magic.
